Edgar Allen Poe (1809-49):Was a fan he allegedly liked to mix his absinthe with brandy (13 )

Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867):A Poet and writer who said "One must be drunk always," and he tried to live by this and was usually drunk on absinthe (14 ).

Ernest Hemingway (1889-1961):Learned about absinthe in Spain and absinthe makes an appearance in several of his Novels including "For Whom the Bell Tolls." (15 ).

Charles Cros (1842-1888): A French musician, poet and scientist who supposedly invented the first phonograph in 1877 but never patenting it ( 16 ).

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903): French Impressionist (painter) he wrote to a friend after moving to Tahiti "I sit at my door . . . sipping my absinthe, and I enjoy every day without a care in the world."(17 ) .

Vincent van Gogh (1853-90): Absinthe has been blamed for him cutting off his ear but other conditions may have also been a factor manic-depression, syphilis and poisoning from paint thinner fumes ( 18 ).

Oscar Wilde (1854-1900): Author who said "A glass of absinthe is as poetical as anything in the world."( 19 ).

Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891): Poet who started to drink absinthe at 16, he had a hard life that included, madness, gun-running and a publicly violent relationship with fellow poet and avid absintheur Paul Verlaine (20 ).

Alfred Jarry (1873-1907): A French playwright who drank absinthe strait. He credited it with helping him to write scandalous play "Ubu Roi" (21 ) .

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973): An Artist who used absinthe in moderation (22 ). Pablo Picasso, in 1914 he unveiled "The Glass of Absinthe," a painted bronze sculpture (21 ).
