Fifty years before the synthesis of Cocaine Peru supplied most of the worlds coca leaf supply. But after 1885 it became a major producer of semi-refined cocaine for the world(18 ).
There were coca wines that were recommended to treat a number of maladies such as female anemia, arthritis, paralysis, senility, plus rejuvenation and prolonging life. They were recommended for all ages (19 ).
One of the most Famous coca wines was patented by Angelo Mariani a Corsican chemist, in 1863. It was called "Vin Mariani". One of the problems it was recommended to treat was larynx and pharynx by a Dr Charles Fauvel of Paris in 1865. Recommendations for other treatments soon followed (20 ).
Vin Mariani, had numerous fans and endorsements among them are Thomas Edison, Pope Leo XIII, the Czar of Russia, Jules Verne, Emile Zola, Henrik Ibsen, the Prince of Wales. Mariani reported that Doctors gave Ulysses Grant former U.S. president and general one teaspoon Mariani with a cup of milk a day. In their opinion this extended his life long enough for him to complete his famous Memoirs(21 ).
Vin Mariani had 11 percent alcohol and 6.5 mg of cocaine in every ounce.(22 )
The Surgeon General of the Peruvian army Tomas Moreno y Maiz experimented with cocaine in 1868 and said it gave him him "some of the most blessed moments of my life.". In 1870 researcher Charles Gazeau took 20 to 40 grams of coca leaf a day and found it suppressed his appetite completely. He believed coca appetite suppressing ability and invigorating powers might have military applications (23).
An article called "Erythroxylon Coca in the Opium and Alcohol Habits," that ran in the Detroit Therapeutic Gazette in 1880 and written by W. H. Bentley cited a number of people cured of morphine addiction (24 ).
